The Time is Now

The month of May and the may (hawthorn) in the hedgerow have been very busy.

We’ve done so much tidying, digging and finally clearing parts of the plot which have been harbouring slugs and snails for months.

Seeds are germinating at home and in the polytunnel. Some seem rather slow but that may just be impatience.

Potatoes are in and carrots and parsnips have germinated and are growing under protective netting. The parsnip seeds were pre-germinated on kitchen towel prior to sowing direct. Coriander seed is sown between the root vegetables.

May has been mostly sunny with beautiful clear, sunny skies but some chilly nights so we keep a close eye on the temperatures. The rainy start gave the wildflowers a head start on our sowings and the HAHA Wildlife plot is looking amazing.

The perennials on our flower patch are filling out and beginning to flower, but those spaces need a few annuals – maybe in June….

Chives and parsley are the only edible growth on the plot at the moment, so they had a role on this floral focaccia that I made – so pretty and tasty too.

And we had a lovely sunny visit to the Newbury Vegan Market, but I really look forward to eating our home-grown again.

It won’t be too much longer now… Mangetout and radish are the first harvests I’m expecting, closely followed by broad beans…

In the meantime we’ll just sit, wait and enjoy the World around us – oh, and weed and water of course ☺️

Photos of planting, growing, harvesting, (occasional) vegetarian cooking and wildlife - this is why the Marsh Lane Allotment site in Hungerford is such a fabulous place to spend time. A record of successes, failures and it's a handy reminder for me too. From 2017 each post title brings a song to add a little extra music to the world - enjoy!
